TIPG Career Series Part 2: Copyright

Are you interested in a career in IP? Are you practising IP and looking for a new direction? We've got you covered.

Join us by webinar for the second in a three-part series on pathways to a fulfilling career in the field of intellectual property. Our second webinar will explore different options in the copyright field. We will hear from leading copyright practitioners Sarah Kilpatrick, Daniela Bassan and Mekhala Chaubal.

Sarah Kilpatrick is Director of Legal Affairs and Public Policy for Music Canada - the trade association for Canada's major record labels, Sony, Universal and Warner. In her role, she  develops policy and advocates for legislative, funding and institutional frameworks which support a healthy music ecosystem. Prior to this role, Sarah was an IP lawyer at a national corporate firm, representing clients before the Copyright Board of Canada - and providing advice on the IP component of mergers and acquisitions.

Daniela Bassan is a Partner at Stewart McKelvey, a full-service law firm with offices throughout Atlantic Canada.  She is Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group and certified as a legal project manager.  Ms. Bassan works with a diverse range of clients in complex commercial litigation including intellectual property and cross-border / international disputes.  She has experience as a member of independent boards and advisory committees in private, public, and charitable sectors.  This includes memberships in law reform initiatives in Canada and Europe, as well as organizations focused on international trade and commerce.  She has spoken at national and international events on a variety of topics including legal innovation and technology.

Mekhala Chaubal is an IP and entertainment lawyer currently working in working in film acquisitions at Entertainment One. Mekhala’s role involves negotiating film rights and drafting contracts to acquire distribution rights from producers and production studios. Working in-house, Mekhala also has the chance to see how the business of film and media distribution takes place, in Canada, the US and in the UK/Europe. In addition, she works on licensing and commercialization matters with Secret Location, eOne’s in-house virtual/augmented/mixed reality content and gaming studio. Mekhala previously practiced IP at BLG, focusing on copyright, trademarks and transactional IP matters.

The panel will be moderated by Christie Bates, TIPG Secretary, and an associate at Cassels, Brock & Blackwell.
